Acute Medicine is concerned with the immediate specialist management of urgent medical presentations [1]. Acute Medicine practitioners have an intuitive or experiential feel of major outcome predictors such as illness severity [2–5], comorbidity [6] and sepsis [7]. The question to be addressed is whether such factors can be measured objectively, related to outcomes, the relative importance of each and any interaction determined.
