European Exchange Programme

EFIM EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The EFIM Exchange Program is a project which offers supervised internships of one month, to the Internal Medicine European residents, in Internal Medicine Units of different countries of Europe.
The EP is managed by a Central Working Group which consists of five members:

1. Pedro Conthe, Spain. Chair.
2. Carla Araujo, Portugal.
3. Maria Cappellini, Italy.
4. Sabine Allard, Belgium (previous committee)
5. Ozan Yazici, Turkey. (previous committee).

The general objectives and approach of the programme are:

The EP would be set in motion under the following terms:
- Each National Society will select the residents who, having met the stipulated requirements explained below, wish to have an option to engage in a rotation of some of the offered posts, which will be a maximum of three for the year 2012.
- EFIM will sponsor a maximum of ten grants of 600 Euros each, which could be increased with an additional amount at the discretion of the National Society.
- The application deadline for residents who wish to participate in the programme is: 10th June 2012
- The period of the stage will be from now to 10th October.

Resident eligibility

1. The resident must speak fluent English.
2. The resident must have completed at least the first two years of medical residency in Internal Medicine.
3. The resident must have current and valid health insurance during the period of stay in the receiving country.

4. The resident must have the support of the National Society of Internal Medicine of their country.
5. The resident should establish prior contact with the tutor in order to obtain information about the equipment for the training period.
6. The resident must have the same workload as the residents of the specialty of Internal Medicine in the receiving country (if possible). 
7 .The resident  will have to do a final report of the exchange which will include:

- The main differences between the two countries in terms of heath care systems.
- The main differences in the management of a particular topic or illness in both countries.
- The final report should be released no later than a month after the experience concluded.
- The final evaluation should be signed by the tutor and should be sent directly to the EFIM EP office and the National Society.

After evaluating the final report of the resident, it will be issued a certificate of approval accredited by the EFIM.

Host requirements for the Hospital and Tutor in charge

1. Hospital should be able to provide an appropriate training in Internal Medicine.
2. The trainee applying for EP should be selected by the official training National   Society in compliance with the measures of each participating country, and according to the requirements settled in EP.

2. The tutor should speak English with the resident guest (this rule does not apply if the resident speaks the language of the receiving country).
4. The clinical visits to patients should be constantly translated by the tutor.
5. Clinical cases should be submitted/discussed in English.
6. Help and support must be provided in finding accommodation.
7. The tutor must evaluate the final report of the trainee and submit a final evaluation to the EFIM EP office.

A total of 8 EFIM National Societies are participating in the EP, and have already proposed several Internal Medical Units with their respective tutors: France, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Slovakia, Turkey and Spain. There are a total amount of 29 Internal Medical Units participating in the EP. Please, look up the available centres in the document “Exchange Programme participants” or request it to efim@comb.cat

Next October, during the EFIM Congress in Madrid, a meeting of the Central Working Group will be held in order to assess the ongoing process of the EP, updating the information gathered. It is necessary that the countries which have participate in this first experience will attend this meeting.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday 24th October at 13.00 pm in Roma room.
