European School of Internal Medicine

History

The European School of Internal Medicine was born in 1998 from a proposal from the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine. The primary goal was to promote good quality continuous medical education for young internists from our member societies. Second, and no less important, was to make the School a meeting point for European residents - a place for exchange and friendship.

The School was founded and developed by Prof Jaime Merino of Alicante, Spain (Director 1998 - 2005). In 2006 the School moved to Sintra, Portugal under the Directorship of Dr Antonio Martins Baptista.  In 2009 the School moved to London under the directorship of Dr Chris Davidson where it was held at the historic old Royal Naval College, University of Greenwich. In 2010 ESIM moved to the University of Sussex, Brighton on the south coast of England.

From 2011 we have planned to run 2 ESIM courses per year, with the first Winter School taking place in Switzerland in January 2011, under the directorship of Prof. Verena Briner. The academic format has remained the same with interactive seminars, case presentations and workshops, with a social programme mid-week and in the evenings.

Young Internists who are towards the end of their training in Internal Medicine are selected and sponsored by their national societies to attend the School, usually 50 - 60 each year with 20 - 25 countries being represented. As a result of the School’s activities since 1998, nearly 1000 residents have passed through the European School and they now form the basis of the growing Young Internists network being developed by the Federation.

Application to Host the European School


EFIM Member countries can apply to host the School for a period of 2 years, which can be extended to a maximum of three. So far the Schools have been held in Spain, Portugal, UK and Switzerland, and from 2012 it will be held in Turkey for two (or three) years. Once each term is nearing completion, member Societies will be invited by the Executive to submit proposals to host the School; the requirements for the Host organisation including details of the facilities necessary can be read here.

Then next session of ESIM will be the 2nd Winter school to be held in Saas - Fee, Switzerland from 15 - 21 January 2012.

Information for National Societies:

1. Potential Speakers: Complete Form A - please return as soon as possible.
I would like to hear from speakers who are interested to participate at ESIM.
As you are probably aware, the travel expenses of speakers will be the
responsibility of their National Society, but ESIM will pay for up to 2 nights
accommodation and all meals during their stay. Form A 


2. Sending Residents: Complete Form B – please return by 1 October 2011
We need to know how many residents your National Society is hoping to
send to ESIM. At the Winter School we are limiting the number to about
50 residents, with a maximum of 2-4 per country. Ideally, ESIM young
internists should be under the age of 35 years, fluent in English, and be
towards the end of their training in Internal Medicine. Form B
