COVID-19 pandemic has generated, to date, over 4.6 million deaths worldwide [1]. The high infection rate, however, is counterbalanced by variable clinical outcomes at the individual level. SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to asymptomatic disease in a large number of subjects (about 40–45% of infections [2]) or to severe clinical presentations with systemic involvement, possibly causing death in the most vulnerable subjects.
