We would like to share some ideas on the article “Is the competition between variants the end of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic? A journey from Wuhan to XBB.1.16 [1].” According to Zappa et al., we are likely reaching a post-epidemic age. SARS-CoV-2 variants are still evolving and surviving, however the severity of infection associated with novel strains may stabilize at lower levels due to evolutionary modifications as compared to previous strains [1]. In any event, tracking SARS-CoV-2 variations remains mandatory, and the implications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) limits and vaccination on virus evolution have yet to be fully understood [1].
