Ischemic heart disease (IHD) continues to be a major public health problem worldwide [1]. It generates a huge social impact in terms of disability; potential years of life lost, and constitutes the main cause of mortality in the world [2–4]. Despite the advances in medical health care, the future does not seem too bright [5].
