The Young Internists is the trainee and young specialist group within EFIM. We aim to connect trainees and specialists in the first few years after accreditation, encourage networking and provide opportunities in career development and mobility. All young specialists and trainees who belong to an EFIM member society are members of the Young Internists group, and some are more actively involved by representing their country in the Assembly or the Subcommittee. We organise events and educational and scientific activities for the community of Young Internists in Europe.

Our mission is to strengthen the specialty of Internal Medicine by:

Creating a network of Young Internists

By forming a strong network of Internists in training or in the early years of specialisation across Europe, we provide opportunities to cooperate, to exchange ideas and to share experiences. We aim to establish a community of Young Internists that will facilitate communication between individuals and national Young Internists groups, encouraging and supporting trainee representation within Internal Medicine across Europe.

Promoting Internal Medicine

The position of Internal Medicine is constantly evolving, and has in some respect been threatened by the increasing sub-specialisation driven by rapidly expanding knowledge and an array of available treatments. However, the demands of multi-morbid, ageing populations and increasing public expectations are difficult to meet by a fragmented, super-specialised health service, and the Young Internists believe that Internal Medicine can form the core of a modern, fit-for-purpose health service. We aim to provide a forum to explore, discuss and promote this vision of Internal Medicine as an adaptable, holistic and patient-centred specialty.

Participating in administrative processes

The participation of Young Internists in administrative processes within EFIM and at national level will help define the problems related to residency training and working conditions and will bring a fresh perspective to these organisations. A European network of Young Internists will enable the new generation to actively participate in decision-making processes pertinent to the specialty of Internal Medicine, service delivery and training.

Education

Young Internists are teachers as well as learners, supervising more junior colleagues as part of their clinical roles. Continuing medical education is one of the principles of EFIM, and the twice-yearly European Schools of Internal Medicine constitute great educational opportunities aimed at Young Internists. Furthermore, the yearly Young Internists’ Day held as part of each EFIM congress provides a forum for Internists in training to share clinical knowledge and experiences as well as exploring non-clinical skills.

Research

Promoting clinical research and enabling Young Internists to participate in research projects are important objectives of this group. The Young Internists network can and has served as an infrastructure for multi-national research projects.
