The most common types of interatrial communications are represented by the ostium secundum, ostium primum and sinus venosus defects. Specifically, the ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASD) represent about 7 % of all congenital cardiac anomalies. occurring in about 1/1500 live births, with an estimated prevalence among females ranging between 65 % and 75 % [1]. Conversely, several epidemiological analyses have showed that patent foramen ovale (PFO) has a prevalence ranging between 25 % and 27 % in adult subjects from general populations [2].
