Rabies is a vaccine preventable zoonosis with a significant mortality burden worldwide, causing about 60,000 deaths each year [1]. Nevertheless, rabies is still a neglected disease [2]. Rabies is reported in more than 150 countries on all continents, with the exclusion of Antarctica [3]. The main burden of disease is reported in Asia and Africa and in the majority of cases rabies occurs after a dog bite, especially in rural areas, with approximately 40% of cases in children under 15 years of age [3].
